📄 Description (English)

Mapscrn 2.0.3 contains a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability that allows local attackers to execute arbitrary code by supplying an oversized input buffer. Attackers can craft a malicious buffer with junk data, return address, NOP instructions, and shellcode to overflow the stack and achieve code execution or denial of service.

🤖 AI Executive Summary

CVE-2017-20226 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Mapscrn 2.0.3 that allows local attackers to execute arbitrary code with CVSS 8.4 severity. The vulnerability requires local access and can be exploited through oversized input buffers to achieve code execution or denial of service. No patch is currently available, making immediate compensating controls critical for affected organizations.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia Impact Assessment
This vulnerability primarily impacts Saudi government agencies, research institutions, and technical organizations that may utilize Mapscrn for mapping or geographic information systems. Risk is elevated for: (1) Government entities under NCA oversight using legacy mapping applications; (2) ARAMCO and energy sector facilities with GIS infrastructure; (3) Telecommunications providers (STC, Mobily) managing network infrastructure visualization; (4) Academic and research institutions. The local-only attack vector limits exposure but poses significant risk in multi-user environments and shared computing infrastructure common in Saudi government networks.

🔧 Remediation Steps (English)
Immediate Actions:
1. Identify all systems running Mapscrn 2.0.3 across your organization through asset inventory and vulnerability scanning
2. Restrict local access to affected systems through access control lists and principle of least privilege
3. Disable or isolate Mapscrn services if not critical to operations
4. Monitor for suspicious local process execution and buffer overflow attempts

Compensating Controls (no patch available):
5. Implement application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized code execution
6. Enable Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and Data Execution Prevention (DEP) at OS level
7. Run Mapscrn in sandboxed or containerized environments with restricted privileges
8. Apply strict input validation and size limits at application wrapper level if possible
9. Monitor system calls and stack memory access patterns for anomalies

Detection Rules:
10. Alert on processes attempting to write to stack memory regions
11. Monitor for NOP sled patterns (0x90 sequences) in process memory
12. Track failed buffer operations and segmentation faults from Mapscrn
13. Log all local user access attempts to Mapscrn services

Long-term:
14. Evaluate replacement mapping solutions with active security support
15. Plan migration away from Mapscrn 2.0.3 to maintained alternatives

Mapscrn
Mapscrn

Mapscrn 2.0.3
