📄 Description (English)

Allok soft WMV to AVI MPEG DVD WMV Converter 4.6.1217 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability that allows local attackers to execute arbitrary code by supplying an oversized string in the License Name field. Attackers can craft a malicious input containing shellcode with structured exception handler (SEH) overwrite to bypass protections and execute code with application privileges.

🤖 AI Executive Summary

CVE-2018-25314 is a local buffer overflow vulnerability in Allok WMV to AVI MPEG DVD WMV Converter 4.6.1217 that allows attackers to execute arbitrary code through oversized input in the License Name field. The vulnerability exploits SEH overwrite techniques to bypass security protections. With a CVSS score of 8.4 and no available patch, this poses a significant risk to organizations using legacy media conversion software, particularly in content creation and media distribution sectors.

🔧 Remediation Steps (English)
Immediate Actions:
1. Identify and inventory all systems running Allok WMV to AVI MPEG DVD WMV Converter 4.6.1217 across the organization
2. Restrict access to affected systems to authorized users only; disable network sharing if possible
3. Implement application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized execution

Compensating Controls (No Patch Available):
1. Migrate to alternative, actively maintained media conversion software (FFmpeg, HandBrake, Adobe Media Encoder)
2. Isolate affected systems from network access or place in air-gapped environments
3. Implement strict input validation and file upload restrictions
4. Run the application in a sandboxed environment or virtual machine with limited privileges
5. Disable SEH-based protections bypass by enabling Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR)
6. Monitor for suspicious process execution and memory access patterns

Detection Rules:
1. Monitor for processes spawning from Allok converter with unusual parent-child relationships
2. Alert on any attempt to write to system directories from the application
3. Track file access patterns to License configuration files
4. Monitor for SEH chain manipulation attempts in memory
5. Log all command-line invocations of the converter application with full arguments

(FFmpeg, HandBrake, Adobe Media Encoder)
Address Space Layout Randomization
