📄 Description (English)

A vulnerability was found in Cesanta Mongoose up to 7.20. This impacts the function handle_mdns_record of the file mongoose.c of the component mDNS Record Handler. Performing a manipulation of the argument buf results in stack-based buffer overflow. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. A high degree of complexity is needed for the attack. The exploitability is said to be difficult. The exploit has been made public and could be used. Upgrading to version 7.21 will fix this issue. The patch is named 0d882f1b43ff2308b7486a56a9d60cd6dba8a3f1. You should upgrade the affected component. The vendor was contacted early, responded in a very professional manner and quickly released a fixed version of the affected product.

🤖 AI Executive Summary

A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Cesanta Mongoose versions up to 7.20 in the mDNS record handler function. While exploitation requires high complexity and is currently difficult, the public disclosure of this vulnerability increases risk. Organizations using Mongoose for embedded systems and IoT applications should prioritize upgrading to version 7.21 or later to mitigate potential remote code execution risks.

🔧 Remediation Steps (English)
Immediate Actions:
1. Identify all systems running Cesanta Mongoose versions up to 7.20 through asset inventory and network scanning
2. Prioritize systems exposed to untrusted networks or handling sensitive mDNS traffic
3. Implement network segmentation to restrict mDNS traffic (UDP port 5353) to trusted sources only

Patching Guidance:
1. Upgrade Mongoose to version 7.21 or later immediately
2. Apply patch 0d882f1b43ff2308b7486a56a9d60cd6dba8a3f1 if upgrading is not immediately possible
3. Test patches in non-production environments before deployment
4. Maintain an inventory of all Mongoose deployments for tracking

Compensating Controls:
1. Disable mDNS functionality if not required for operations
2. Implement firewall rules to block mDNS traffic from untrusted networks
3. Monitor for suspicious mDNS queries and buffer overflow attempts
4. Deploy intrusion detection signatures for mDNS buffer overflow patterns

Detection Rules:
1. Monitor for mDNS packets with unusually large record sizes exceeding normal parameters
2. Alert on mDNS queries with malformed record structures
3. Track Mongoose process crashes or unexpected restarts
4. Log all mDNS traffic for forensic analysis
