📄 Description (English)

A flaw has been found in Edimax BR-6675nD 1.12. Affected by this issue is the function formPPTPSetup of the file /goform/formPPTPSetup of the component POST Request Handler. Executing a manipulation of the argument pptpUserName can lead to buffer overflow. The attack may be launched remotely. The exploit has been published and may be used. The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.

🤖 AI Executive Summary

A critical buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Edimax BR-6675nD router firmware (version 1.12) affecting the PPTP setup functionality. The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by manipulating the pptpUserName parameter in POST requests. With no patch available and exploit code published, this poses an immediate threat to organizations using this router model for network connectivity.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia Impact Assessment
This vulnerability poses significant risk to Saudi organizations, particularly: (1) Banking sector and SAMA-regulated institutions using Edimax routers for branch connectivity or VPN access; (2) Government agencies and NCA-monitored entities relying on these devices for secure communications; (3) Telecom providers (STC, Mobily, Zain) using these routers in network infrastructure; (4) Healthcare facilities and SEHA-connected organizations using PPTP for remote access; (5) Energy sector including ARAMCO subsidiaries using these routers for operational technology networks. The lack of vendor response and published exploits elevates risk significantly.

🔧 Remediation Steps (English)
IMMEDIATE ACTIONS:
1. Identify all Edimax BR-6675nD routers in your network using network scanning tools (nmap, Shodan queries for Saudi IP ranges)
2. Isolate affected routers from critical network segments if possible
3. Disable PPTP functionality immediately if not essential for operations
4. Implement network segmentation to restrict access to router management interfaces
5. Monitor router logs for suspicious POST requests to /goform/formPPTPSetup

COMPENSATING CONTROLS:
1. Deploy WAF/IPS rules to block malformed PPTP setup requests with oversized pptpUserName parameters
2. Restrict administrative access to router web interface using IP whitelisting
3. Implement VPN alternatives (L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN) instead of PPTP
4. Deploy network-based intrusion detection with signatures for buffer overflow attempts
5. Enable router authentication logging and forward logs to SIEM

DETECTION RULES:
1. Alert on POST requests to /goform/formPPTPSetup with pptpUserName parameter exceeding 256 bytes
2. Monitor for unusual process execution on router (SSH/Telnet access patterns)
3. Track failed authentication attempts followed by successful admin access
4. Flag any firmware modification attempts

LONG-TERM:
1. Replace Edimax BR-6675nD with alternative vendors (Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet) that provide regular security updates
2. Establish vendor security update monitoring process
3. Implement hardware refresh cycle for network equipment

SSH/Telnet)
