📄 Description (English)

HNB Organizer 1.9.18-10 contains a local buffer overflow vulnerability that allows local attackers to execute arbitrary code by supplying an oversized argument to the -rc command-line parameter. Attackers can craft a malicious input string exceeding 108 bytes containing shellcode and a return address to overwrite the stack and achieve code execution.

🤖 AI Executive Summary

CVE-2016-20045 is a local buffer overflow vulnerability in HNB Organizer 1.9.18-10 that allows authenticated local attackers to execute arbitrary code through oversized command-line arguments to the -rc parameter. With a CVSS score of 8.4, this vulnerability poses a significant risk to systems where untrusted users have local access. No patch is currently available, requiring immediate compensating controls and monitoring.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia Impact Assessment
This vulnerability primarily affects Saudi government agencies, research institutions, and enterprises using HNB Organizer for personal information management. High-risk sectors include: Government (NCA, NCSC) systems where local user access is prevalent; Financial institutions (SAMA-regulated banks) with multi-user workstations; Healthcare organizations (MOH) managing sensitive patient data; and Educational institutions. The local-only attack vector limits exposure but poses critical risk in shared computing environments common in Saudi government and corporate settings.

🔧 Remediation Steps (English)
Immediate Actions:
1. Inventory all systems running HNB Organizer 1.9.18-10 and document user access patterns
2. Restrict local user access to systems running HNB Organizer using principle of least privilege
3. Disable or remove HNB Organizer if not actively required for business operations
4. Implement application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized execution

Compensating Controls:
1. Apply strict file system permissions to HNB Organizer executable and configuration directories (chmod 750 or equivalent)
2. Monitor process execution logs for HNB Organizer invocations with unusual command-line arguments
3. Implement AppArmor or SELinux profiles to restrict HNB Organizer capabilities
4. Use endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools to monitor for stack-based code execution patterns
5. Enforce code signing verification for all HNB Organizer binaries

Detection Rules:
1. Alert on HNB Organizer process execution with -rc parameter containing arguments >108 bytes
2. Monitor for abnormal child process spawning from HNB Organizer
3. Track stack memory access violations and segmentation faults from HNB Organizer
4. Log all local user privilege escalation attempts following HNB Organizer execution

Long-term:
1. Migrate to alternative, actively maintained personal information management solutions
2. Evaluate vendor security posture before adopting similar tools

HNB Organizer

HNB Organizer
HNB Organizer
HNB Organizer
